Certara Launches Updated Version of Pirana Modeling Workbench

PRINCETON, N.J.— December 1, 2023 – Certara, Inc., a global leader in biosimulation, today announced the release of version 23.10.1 of Pirana, a workbench solution that simplifies and harmonizes the use of multiple toolsets commonly used for pharmacometrics analysis, including tools like Certara’s R speaks NLME. This release continues to expand the machine learning capabilities of Pirana, enabling scientists to automatically identify the best models leading to faster informed decisions about drug dosing, safety, and efficacy.

Pirana’s machine learning tools provide modelers with the structure to automatically create and evaluate many thousands of population PK models within a user-defined search space, and compare their performance against user-specified model fitness criteria to select the best model for use in simulations or other decision-enabling analyses. The addition of the Darwin automated model selection feature in Pirana is expected to lead to a 20-30% time reduction in the overall pharmacometrics analysis workflow.

Version 23.10.1 includes a new machine learning algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, and an innovative reporting solution that proposes informative diagnostics and summary outputs for communicating machine learning based model search results.  Additionally, new grid workload ease the setup of powerful computing environments necessary for machine learning.

Key Pirana updates of version 23.10.1 include the following:

  • Improvement of Machine Learning Capabilities for Better Evaluation and Selection of Models: The reporting and diagnostics toolkit, Darwin Reporter, is tailored for use with machine learning-assisted model selection analyses. This feature helps researchers quickly evaluate, report, and diagnose their models, making it easier to choose the best ones for their research.
  • Optimized Ease of Use: Pirana now includes a GUI for easy Visual Predictive Checks (VPC) setup and R code generation, enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and accuracy.
  • Enhanced Job Management for Simplified Scheduling and Resource Management: Pirana 23.10.1 includes a new generic interface to support grid workload managers, and now has built in support for the scheduling and resource management systems Slurm, SGE, and jsub-Torque which simplify scheduling and resource management when processing large jobs.
